The Rule

Cleft sentences split a single clause into two parts to place emphasis on a specific element. They are common in presentations, formal writing, and any context where you want to highlight a particular point.

TypeStructureExample
It-cleftIt + be + emphasised element + that/who clauseIt was the pricing that put off the client.
Wh-cleft (pseudo-cleft)What + clause + be + emphasised elementWhat we need is a clearer strategy.
Reversed wh-cleftEmphasised element + be + what + clauseA clearer strategy is what we need.
All-cleftAll + subject + verb + be + infinitiveAll I need is more time to review it.
Clefts are especially useful in presentations and negotiations:
"What we are proposing is a phased approach." (highlights the proposal)
"It is the quality, not the price, that differentiates us." (highlights the key factor)
"What I'd like to focus on today is the data." (signals structure)
