The Rule

Mixed conditionals combine elements of the second and third conditional when the time references are different — the cause is in the past but the result is in the present, or vice versa.

TypeStructureExample
Past cause → Present resultIf + past perfect, would + infinitiveIf I had studied law, I would be a lawyer now.
Present situation → Past resultIf + past simple, would have + past participleIf I were more organised, I would have finished by now.
Compare
Pure 3rd: If I had taken that job, I would have moved to London.(past cause, past result)
Mixed: If I had taken that job, I would be living in London now.(past cause, present result)
Mixed: If I were more ambitious, I would have applied for the role.(present state, past result)
The key question to ask: When is the cause? When is the result?
Same time = pure 2nd or 3rd conditional.
Different times = mixed conditional.
