Articles
Articles are small words but they carry important meaning. 'I saw a dog in the park' — the first time, we use 'a' because we do not know which dog. 'The dog was very friendly' — now we use 'the' because we both know which dog. 'The sun rises in the east' — we use 'the' because there is only one sun. 'Dogs are loyal animals' — no article because this is a general statement about all dogs. Articles cause problems for many learners because many languages do not have them. With practice, they become natural.
💡 Did you know? English has only three articles: a, an, and the. But some languages have many more. German has sixteen different article forms depending on gender and grammatical case.
